Albuquerque, N.M. --- Liz Nare, who scored in the season opener last year, was on the receiving end of a tic-tac-toe set up, slotting home the winning goal just 1:50 into overtime, giving the Silver squad a 2-1 overtime win over the Cherry squad in the only exhibition match of the season for the Lobos.

The 35-person squad was split up into two teams, although players ended up crossing teams at times in order for players to get rest. The Silver squad that started featured most of the upperclassmen, with two freshmen in Ruth Bruciaga and Tera Trujillo.

The teams were tied at half, although sophomore Dylann O'Connor did her best to change that. The sophomore, who played the most minutes of any freshman last year, recorded six of Silver's eight first half shots, putting four on net. Her best chance came 15 minutes in when her shot ticketed for the lower corner was stopped by Ally Lambros, who got a piece of it and then dove behind her, slapping the ball of the line. O'Connor raced for the rebound, but that shot was again saved by Lambros, keeping the game scoreless.

In the second half, the offenses finally got rewarded. First it was Cherry tallying with 7:21 into the half. Maddie Irwin found Olivia Ferrier about 25 yards out, and the sophomore hit a rocket that got past the diving Cassie Ulrich for a 1-0 lead.

Silver would eventually answer with a nice string of passes. Alyssa Coonrod went down the right side and sent a ball into Bruciaga, who one-touched it to O'Connor near the penalty spot. She one-touched it short side past Julia Vaughan, who replaced Lambros at halftime, to tie the game at 1-1 with 13:47 to go.

In overtime, it was O'Connor again, who found Ferrier for a wall pass back to Nare, who put her shot in the same spot as O'Connor. That proved the game-winner just 1:50 in overtime.

"I thought both teams did a lot of great things," said head coach Kit Vela. "We saw a lot of young players coming along. I thought our second half and our overtime we finished really well. We played with attitude and confidence, and we found some young players come along as the game went along. You want both teams to do well because that's your depth out there."

Cassie Ulrich started in net for Silver, and wasn't overly busy, facing just five shots, making one save. Lambros and Vaughan saw 18 shots (nine from the foot of O'Connor), with Lambros notching five saves and Vaughan four. It was Vaughan's first action in several days as she was excused from camp to attend a funeral in Arizona.

Ferrier and O'Connor each had a goal and an assist, although Ferrier's was split between the two squads. Overall, 27 players saw action for the Lobos.

New Mexico opens its 20th Anniversary season next Friday with a 6 p.m. home match against Texas Tech. Fans can still purchase Lobo Pride Passes for $50, which admits one person to all women's soccer matches, as well as men's soccer, volleyball, baseball, softball, track, and swimming and diving. The first 500 to purchase a Lobo Pride Pass will receive a Lobo scarf.

NOTES: Nare's overtime goal was the only shot in the extra period ... Brianna Webster and Ferrier joined defensive mainstays Nare and Brooke Ellison in the defensive backfield. Nare played all but four minutes last year and has a shot to se the school record for most minutes played in a career by a field player.
