Moraga, Calif. --- Briana Campos of Saint Mary’s snuck past UNM’s defense and poked a breakaway past Cassie Ulrich for the only goal of the match as the Lobos lost 1-0 at the Saint Mary’s Classic in Moraga, California.

The loss dropped the Lobos to 2-5, and it was the fifth one-goal loss for UNM, and the fourth time this season that the Lobos have dropped a 1-0 decision.  It was also the third 1-0 loss in the last four games.

The Lobos and the Gaels (3-4-0) played to a scoreless draw in the opening half, the 33rd time in the last 39 games that the Lobos have held an opponent scoreless in the first half.  The best opportunity for either team came right at the end of the period when Madisyn Olguin stole a ball near the touchline and  lofted a shot that Saint Mary’s keeper Kaeli Schmidt had to leap and snag just before the halftime whistle hit.

In the second half, the Gaels only had one threatening moment, but it was all they needed.  After a clearing header by Brianna Webster, Samantha Dion gathered a loose ball, took a pair of dribbles and sent a through ball to Campos, who raced between two defenders.  Keeper Cassie Ulrich came out and tried to cover as much ground as she could, but Campos just did beat her to the ball and poked it past, where it rolled into the net for the only goal Saint Mary’s would need.

UNM tried to muster a counter, but UNM’s best opportunity was a long shot from outside the box by Alexis Leyba that was saved, and a shot from the side of the box by Olguin that went short side where there was an opening, but the ball hit the side of the net.

UNM outshot Saint Mary’s 6-5, and 4-3 on net as most of the run of play occurred in the midfield.  Schmidt had four saves, and Ulrich had two for the Lobos, who now take on Pacific on Sunday at noon.  Pacific tied Lehigh 1-1 in the first game of the Saint Mary’s Classic.

NOTES: New Mexico is 1-4 in 1-0 games this season, after going 6-2 last year in those games … Ulrich now has a goals against average of 0.84, and she entered the game with the third-most saves in the nation, and the seventh-highest save percentage … Brooke Ellison and Liz Nare both came out late in the match, leaving Brianna Webster, Elba Holguin, and Ulrich as the only players who have played all 639 minutes.
