Lobos Open Conference Play at Home on Friday

This Week in UNM Women’s Soccer ... The Lobos will face off against San José State on Friday evening at 5 p.m. in the Mountain West opener for both teams. The Lobos on Sunday will take on Fresno State at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

The Lobos went 0-1-1 last weekend, losing to UC Santa Barbara 2-0 in a game that the Lobos controlled the run of play from start to finish. The squad then picked oup its first tie of the season, a 0-0 scoreless draw with UC Davis.

San José State is 1-7-0 on the year, having lost its first seven before defeating Pacific 3-2 two weekends ago. Lupita Estrada has three goals (out of SJSU’s six) to lead the Spartans. They have split time with two keepers with Zoe Makrigannis sporting a 1.79 goals against average, and Sarah Peplinski a 2.94.

Fresno State is 3-5-1 on the season, having played a few high-scoring games lately, as 17 goals have been scored combined in its last five contests.

Lobos vs. San José State
The Lobos and San José State have played twice, and neither of this were in this century. The two teams played in back-to-back years in the WAC Tournament in San José, with the Spartans winning both. In 1996, San José State won 3-1, and in the 1997, San José State won 2-0. Both of those matchups were opening round matches.

Lobos vs. Fresno State
New Mexico will be meeting Fresno State for the fourth time, and after meeting once every eight years, this will be the first time that they have played in back-to-back years. Fresno State leads the series with two wins and a tie. Kit Vela is 0-1-1 against Fresno State, and 0-0-1 in Mountain West action.

The first meeting between the two programs was in 1996, when the Bulldogs won 1-0 in Irvine, California. Eight years later Fresno State won again, winning 4-2 in a meeting in Albuquerque in 2004. Last year the two teams played to a 1-1 tie. Natalie Jenks scored with 15 minutes left to tie the match up at 1-1, and UNM got the tie despite being outshot 23-11, although New Mexico outshot Fresno State on goal 7-6.
