New Mexico 1, Air Force 0 (Match Report)
Colorado Springs, Colo. – New Mexico senior Elba Holguin beat Kelly Stambaugh from the center of the box 10 minutes into the second half, and the Lobos put away Air Force 1-0 in Colorado Springs. The win pushed the Lobos to 6-8-1 overall, but 4-1 in the Mountain West.
Air Force, which was playing its second match since the athletics has resumed at the service academies, is now 2-8-1 overall and 1-2 in the Mountain West. The win coupled with San Diego State's loss to Wyoming and Fresno State's win over Boise State puts UNM, San Diego State and Fresno State in a first place tie with 12 points, although UNM and San Diego State are both 4-1, and Fresno State is 4-2. Fresno State's two losses are to UNM and San Diego State.
New Mexico got the only goal it would need at the 55:09 mark when Madisyn Olguin sent a ball across to Elba Holguin, who settled it and shot one to the right of a diving Kelly Stambaugh. New Mexico, which for the third straight game did not allow a shot in the first half, needed just one save from Cassie Ulrich, but it was a big one, making a nice stop on Ally Swift’s hard shot with just over 15 minutes left in the contest.
Ulrich made that lone save in posting her sixth shutout of the season.
New Mexico return home for a Friday night showdown with Nevada at 5 p.m. at the UNM Soccer Complex.
