ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - In its final warm up before heading to Tucson, Ariz., to face the Arizona Wildcats, the University of New Mexico women's soccer team played a fiercely competitive scrimmage Thursday afternoon at the UNM Soccer Complex.
In the end the Cherry squad used second-half goals less than three minutes apart to claim a 2-1 victory. Silver scored with just over eight minutes remaining but couldn't draw even.
Ruth Bruciaga opened the scoring for Cherry in the 70th minute and then assisted on Madisyn Olguin's goal in the 73rd minute. Claire Lynch, who assisted on Bruciaga's goal, then added another assist, but this time for Silver. Lauren Shull was the beneficiary as she scored in the 82nd minute to draw Silver within one.
Lynch was hardly the only player to see action on both teams. Eleven players eventually suited up for each side as all 29 players saw extensive action.
Cassie Ulrich was able to stop two of the three Silver shots that she saw, while Silver's keeper, redshirt freshman Laura DeMers, managed to turn aside six of the eight shots she faced. Olguin led all players with five shots on goal.
UNM departs for a scrimmage at Arizona Saturday, Aug. 16 and plays its first regular-season game at Texas Tech on Friday, Aug. 22.
