Wyoming 3, New Mexico 2, (Match Report)
Laramie, Wyo. – New Mexico was just six seconds away from a fourth straight win and a perfect conference record. Instead, Wyoming somehow walked away with an improbable 3-2 double overtime win to knock the Lobos from the ranks of the unbeaten.
The Lobos saw their three-match winning streak end and dropped to 5-8-1 overall and 3-1 in conference play. Wyoming is now also 5-8-1 overall, and 2-2 in conference play.
Wyoming won it when Lucie McDowell, Wyoming’s leading scorer, streaked down the right flank and took a sharp angle shot that banked in off the far left post for the winner. However, the play probably should have never happened.
Sixteen seconds earlier, Savannah Viola got tangled up with a Wyoming player and went down. Head Coach Kit Vela and trainer Kyle Hickey went across the field to tend to Viola while Olivia Ferrier went into the game for her. With Viola, Vela and Hickey still down on the far side, albeit barely off the pitch, The game restarted and McDowell went down the right side which was vacated by Viola. Vela argued that you can’t restart the play with a coach and player off the field on the wrong side to no avail.
The game went to overtime in a pretty good act of desperation by Wyoming, as McDowell’s pass was headed in by Sheree Small with six seconds left, tying the game at 2-2. That answered a goal by UNM’s Annie Wheeler, who scored off a scramble in front with 18:43 to go, giving the Lobos a 2-1 lead. Senior midfielder Elba Holguin, who sent the original ball into the box that was deflected away, was credited with the assist.
Wheeler's goal was a solid response to an opening portion of the second half where Wyoming put some pressure on the Lobos after a first half that pretty much went UNM’s way. Wyoming didn’t get its first shot until early in the second half, and their first goal was also on a header, this by Kasey Curtis off a corner kick.
UNM owned the run of play in the first half, but got some help in the opening few minutes. O’Connor took a ball at midfield and raced down the right flank. She sent a soaring pass into the box towards Ruth Bruciaga, but a Cowgirl defender attempted to clear it, but placed it into the back of her own net for an own goal.
New Mexico will stay on the road and look to get back in the win column as they travel to Air Force for a Sunday matchup at 11 a.m.
