COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – University of New Mexico senior Luke Caldwell has been named Mountain West Men’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week for meets contested Oct. 9 through Oct. 20.
This is Caldwell’s second award of the 2013 cross country season, and third of his Lobo career, as he also won the award for meets contested from Sept. 30 through Oct. 6. after his performance at the 2013 Notre Dame Invitational.
Caldwell, from Betchworth, England, placed seventh at the recent Wisconsin adidas Invitational in Madison, Wis. He covered the tough 8-kilometer course in a time of 23 minutes, 30 seconds and in the process mixed it with some of the nations best cross country runners.
His time is also the fastest in the Mountain West so far this season.
Turning in his sixth team-leading performance out of the last seven meets, Caldwell helped his then ranked No.25 teammates to a fifth place overall finish at the Wisconsin meet, which now sees the Lobos ranked ninth in the nation according to the latest U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association national rankings released Tuesday.
Boise State’s Emma Bates won this week’s award on the women’s side.
