ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Lobos will travel down south this weekend to Las Cruces where they will face NMSU for the regular season finale of the 2012-13 season.
New Mexico is hoping to come away victorious against an Aggie team that is celebrating Senior Day and is also looking to avenge a 138-195 loss at the hands of UNM earlier this season. The Aggies loss was the first loss against UNM since the 2006-2007 season. The Lobos did manage to tie NMSU last season 150-150, but the 138-195 score was the first outright victory for UNM in six meetings.
New Mexico State goes into their final home meet of the season with on overall record of 3-5 and 2-3 in duel meets. The 2012-13 squad features 12 returning letterman- four of which are seniors- from the previous season which saw NMSU finish fourth at the WAC Championships.
The Lobos currently stand at 5-4, which would put them in sixth place in the Mountain West.
Most recently UNM hit the road to face Wyoming and Northern Colorado and it came away with a win and a loss.
Wyoming easily defeated the Lobos with a final score of 130-69, but the Lobos were able to bounce back and take down the Bears of Northern Colorado, 166-129.
New Mexico has been swimming well throughout the season and it will look to close out the season strong. With this being the last meet of the regular season, the Lobos could easily look past the Aggies and already be thinking about the conference championships in three weeks; however, as Kunio Kono stated, "we are excited about conference, but we will keep taking it one meet at a time while also approaching the last few meets as mini training trips. We're looking forward to swimming against NMSU."
Following the Rio Grande Rivalry meet, the Lobos will taper in the weeks leading up to the 2013 Mountain West Championships that are taking place in San Antonio, Texas this year from Feb. 20-23. New Mexico was picked to finish sixth in the preseason coaches' poll prior to the start of the season.
