ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – This weekend will be an especially eventful one for New Mexico’s swimming and diving team. The Lobos will not only head to Colorado Springs, Colo., to participate in the Air Force Diving Invitational but will also come back to compete in their final home meet of the season in the Seidler Natatorium.
UNM will go head-to-head with Rio Grande Rival New Mexico St., which is coming off a 104-158 loss to Grand Canyon. The Aggies currently hold a 2-5 record for the 2013-2014 season. Two seasons ago UNM and NMSU tied at 150-150 points but last year the Lobos were victorious taking the meet with a 178.5-121.5 final score. This weekend’s performances will prove who will take the win this year.
The final home meet of the season also means Senior Day for the Lobos. Although Saturday will not be the last time for New Mexico’s four-year swimmers to compete this season, it will be a goodbye to racing in the Seidler Natorium. Six senior swimmers, Ashley Blanchette, Julia Carroll, Monica Dudley, Jorgi Hobson, Jessica Montoya, and Heidi Zeiger, will be recognized for their success and contributions to UNM’s swimming and diving program.
“We are all excited about this weekend. Our senior class is the strongest in both athletics and academics, they have built us into who we are today,” Head Coach Kunio Kono says about the soon departing group.
He includes, “They will be missed so much but are ready to race this weekend and in the MWC Championships.”
Competition will begin Saturday, Feb. 1 at 12:00 p.m. MT in the Seidler Natatorium.
