MOSCOW — Former University of New Mexico track and field athlete Jarrin Solomon placed 11th overall in the semifinal round of the men’s 400-meter dash Monday at the 14th IAAF World Championships in Moscow, Russia.

Solomon, a 2009 Lobo graduate and an Albuquerque native, clocked a strong time of 45.43 seconds for Trinidad and Tobago, but couldn’t achieve the standard required to move on to the finals.

The top two finishers in each of three heats plus the next two fastest finishers advance to the finals. Solomon, who finished sixth overall in yesterday’s opening round, finished fourth in his heat on Monday.

Solomon set his personal record yesterday at Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow, clocking in at 45.19.

The finals of the 400 will be contested tomorrow at 9:50 p.m. local time (11:50 a.m. MT).

The United States’ LaShawn Merritt claimed first overall in 44.60, while Solomon’s teammate, Deon Lendore, took 12th overall (45.47).

Solomon and Lendore, however, are still slated to defend their 2012 Olympic bronze medal in the 4x400 meter relay on Thursday. They will join Lalonde Gordon, Renny Quow, Machel Cedenio and Jehue Gordon at 7:05 p.m. local time (9:05 a.m. MT) in the semifinals of the 4x400.
