Last week, a handful of Lobos opened their outdoor seasons. This week, it’s the rest of the team’s turn.
The University of New Mexico track and field team is traveling to the Texas Tech Open Saturday as it looks for strong season debuts in the first action of the outdoor campaign for the majority of the squad.
The Lobos competed just seven athletes last weekend in the team’s first competition outdoors, but will head to Terry & Linda Fuller Track and Field Complex in Lubbock, Texas, this weekend to get more athletes back on the track after not competing for over a month.
“This meet is pretty much the bulk of the team,” New Mexico head coach Joe Franklin said. “Some people won’t compete, but pretty much the bulk of the team will be there. It’s a phenomenal facility and phenomenal track, and this is really about getting back going.”
Most of the Lobos haven’t seen action since New Mexico swept the Mountain West Indoor championships on March 1. This weekend gives most of athletes a chance to get back in the swing of things with the postseason still eight weeks away.
The top 48 athletes in each event in the NCAA’s West Region advance to the NCAA West Preliminary Championship, which is the qualifying meet for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in June.
Leading the Lobos in Lubbock are the squad’s sprinters and hurdlers, including All-Mountain West performers Chaz Lewis and Kayla Fisher-Taylor.
On the men’s side, Lewis, Mustafa Mudada and Cheyne Dorsey are looking for success in the 400-meter hurdles, while Richard York and Yannick Roggatz are slated to compete in the 110 hurdles. Chris Kline is entered in the 200 and the 400, with Kendall Spencer and Warrick Campbell in the 400.
Kline, Mudada, Lewis and Dorsey are also entered in the 4x400 meter relay.
For the women, the Fisher-Taylor, Peri Moran and Brittany Myricks will run the 100 and the 200, with Aasha Marler and Haley Sanner competing in the 100 and Samantha Bowe in the 200. Fisher-Taylor, Moran, Sanner and Myricks will also compete in the 4x100 relay.
Additionally, Howell, VanGrinsven, Sanner and Riker-Urrutia will race one of two 4x400 relays, with Burch, Vigil, Kerr and Christina Clark in the second relay.
Van Grinsven and Bowe are also primed to go in the 100 hurdles, as are Sanner and Clark in the 400 hurdles.
Out in the field, the Lobos will see their pole vaulters and javelin throwers make their season debuts.
Bowe will compete in the javelin for the women, as well.
The meet starts Saturday with field events at 9:30 a.m. MT and track events at 2 p.m. MT. Check back at GoLobos.com after the meet for a full recap.
