ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Senior track and field student-athletes Gabe Aragon and Thomas Trujillo have been named to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America Division I men’s track and field/cross country teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Aragon was selected to the second team and Trujillo to the third team, which increases the University of New Mexico’s total number of All-America recipients in the 2012-13 school year to an unprecedented five student-athletes.

Aragon, a mid-distance runner from Albuquerque, N.M., finished his senior year at New Mexico with a 3.97 GPA, where he majored in business administration. While running for the Lobos, Aragon was part of a distance medley relay (DMR) team that earned First Team All-American status from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) in 2011.

He was also selected to a handful of All-Mountain West Indoor teams, including in 2011 in the DMR, in 2012 in the 800-meter run and in 2013 in the 4x400 meter relay.

Aragon was a four-time Academic All-Conference recipient from 2010-13, and was named a Mountain West Scholar-Athlete in 2010, 2011 and 2013.

Thomas Trujillo, Third-Team Academic All-America

Trujillo, a Rio Rancho, N.M., product, also just completed his senior year at UNM, posting a 4.07 GPA as he majored in business administration. As a sprinter for the Lobos, he was selected to two All-Mountain West Outdoor Team, once in 2010 (4x400 meter relay) and again in 2011 (4x100 meter relay).

He is also part of two 4x100 meter relay teams that rank second and third all-time in school history.

Additionally, he was recognized for his work in the classroom, earning Academic All-Mountain West three times (2009-11) and MW Scholar Athlete four times (2009-11, 2013).

The duo’s selections nearly doubled the number of academic All-Americans that Lobo track and field has received. ESPN The Magazine named Jeremy Johnson third team Academic All-America in 2007 and Frank Hemmingway second team Academic All-America in 2006, while Mark Johnson was selected as an Academic All-American in 2004.

New Mexico is also just one of three institutions to receive multiple men’s Academic All-Americans in 2013. Air Force (Jeremy Drenckhahn and Matthew Bell) and Baylor (Blake Niccum and Taylor Jackson) also earned multiple selections.

For UNM as a whole, Aragon and Trujillo are the fourth and fifth Academic All-America selections this year, which sets a new school record. (The previous best was four back in 2010-11 and 2011-12.) Their selections give UNM 16 selections over the last four years.

The Lobos also received 16 Academic All-District selections in 2012-13, which is another school record.
