2012-13 Mountain West Scholar-Athlete Awards Announced

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Chalk up another Mountain West title for the University of New Mexico as the Lobos landed 132 student-athletes on the League's list of 2012-13 Scholar-Athletes as announced by the Conference on Monday.

The award is one of the highest academic honors bestowed by the MW. To be eligible, student-athletes must have completed at least two academic terms at the member institution, while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better, and have participated in varsity competition in an NCAA-sponsored sport.

Boise State finished second with 78 student-athletes receiving the accolade while Wyoming was third with 71 honorees.

Eight multi-sport Lobos were recognized, including Gabriel Aragon and Luke Caldwell (men's cross country/track and field); Charlotte Arter, Kirsten Follett, Janna Mitsos, Josephine Moultrie, Shawna Winnegar (women's cross country/track and field); and Lexi Ross (volleyball/women's track and field).

UNM posted league highs in 11 sports: baseball (tied with Fresno State with 6), football (tied with Wyoming with 6), men's golf (3), women's golf (5), men's soccer (7), women's soccer (16), softball (tied with Fresno State with 7), women's swimming and diving (14), men's tennis (5), men's track and field (9) and women's track and field (17).

A league-record 623 student-athletes were honored, including 54 individuals who achieved a 4.00 or higher cumulative grade point average over two or more terms, and 63 student-athletes who were recognized in multiple sports. The 623 award recipients surpasses the previous Conference high of 581 in 2010-11.
