New Mexico Takes Top Finishes At UTEP Invitational

El Paso, Texas- The University of New Mexico track and field team had several athletes finish with top marks today at the UTEP Invitational in El Paso, Texas. Senior Briana Paxton took first place in the discus throw. Paxton had a mark of 158-10 (48.43m) breaking her old personal best of 157-4 (47.96m). The mark keeps her in second place on UNM's all-time list in the discus.

Paxton wasn't the only one who took first place in her respective event. Senior Carolyn Boosey took first place in the 3,000m steeplechase. Boosey ran a time of 11:26.49. April Lewis, of in-state rival NMSU, took second with a time of 12:17.75.

Junior Ryan Steadman shaved time off his personal best (49.30) in the 400m dash with a time of 49.25, good for a fifth place finish.

Kelly Fortner recorded a new career-best in the pole vault with a mark of 11-9.75 (3.60m), beating her old mark of 11-07.75.

Also finishing in the top three in their respective events were:
• Senior Ashley Gibson finished second in the 800m with a time of 2:13.06
• Freshman Ashley Minkis finished second in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:03.73
• Freshman Sam Evans finished second in the 800m with a time of 1:52.45
• Freshman Sean Stam earned a second place finish in the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 9:32.81
Richard York finished second in the javelin throw with a mark of 185-7 (56.56m)
• Junior Kelly McCabe took third in the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 12:36.97
• Freshman Marin Schweigert finished third in the high jump with a mark of 5-3 (1.60m)
• Freshman Alex Kitterman finished third with a mark of 177-0 (53.96m) in the javelin throw
• Freshman De'Vron Walker finished third in the 110m dash with a time of 14.63
• The men's 4x400 meter relay team of freshmen Derek Montoya, Sam Evans, Gabe Aragon and junior Ryan Steadman finished third with a time of 3:17.90

The track and field team will be sending some athletes to Fort Worth, Texas next weekend for the TCU Invitational and some to Walnut, Calif. for the Mt. SAC Relays.
