AUSTIN, Texas - Junior Tiyana Peters won the section B high jump to pace the University of New Mexico track and field team this morning at the 80th Texas Relays. Peters cleared an outdoor-best and NCAA regional qualifying height of 5' 8 3/4" (1.75m) for the third straight week to earn her first victory of the season.

Peters, who was 15th in the event at the 2006 Texas Relays, was one of six women to clear 5' 8 3/4", but used fewer attempts to clear the bar. The Flanders, N.J. product entered the meet ranked No. 1 in the Mountain West Conference this spring after winning the MWC indoor high jump title in February with a lifetime best of 5' 10".

Meanwhile, the New Mexico men's 4x400-meter relay team came up short in its attempt to qualify for the NCAA regional championships. The team of Taylor Siemon, Kurt Henry, Jarrin Solomon and Randle McCain finished 14th in the field of 31 with a time of 3:11.69 - 1.69 seconds off the regional qualifying standard and 1.46 seconds shy of advancing to the event finals on Saturday. The foursome improved dramatically, however, on their Texas Relays debut last year, when they finished 24th with a time of 3:13.10.

MWC rival TCU moved atop the conference performance list with a time of 3:10.29 in the event. The Frogs finished 10th, one spot shy of advancing to the finals.

Javelin throwers Anthony Fairbanks and Katie Coronado will be the final Lobos to compete in Austin. Fairbanks will compete in the section B men's javelin, which begins at 6 p.m. (Mountain) tonight, while Coronado will take part in the section A women's javelin tomorrow at 10 a.m. Both athletes lead the MWC in their respective events and have already qualified for the NCAA regional meet.
