AZUSA, Calif. - University of New Mexico sophomore Sandy Fortner turned in a solid performance in her first full heptathlon competition of the year, finishing ninth with a score of 5,011 in the Mt. SAC Relays section late Thursday at Azusa Pacific University. Fortner recorded season-bests in five of the seven events after being sidelined the past two weeks with a hamstring injury. The Fort Sumner, N.M. product was forced to pull out her first heptathlon of the season at Arizona on May 23 after suffering the injury in the fifth event.

Fortner smashed her career-best in the shot put for the second time this year, recording a mark of 40' 9". She also recorded season-bests in the 100-meter hurdles (15.02), 200 (25.77), long jump (18' 1 1/2") and 800 (2:23.74). She also recorded a solid high jump mark of 5' 4 1/4".

Fortner stumbled a bit, however, in the javelin (89' 1"), throwing 32 feet under her previous best this spring. She recorded a career-best mark of 121' 5" in the season-opener at Arizona State, which would have been good for a 190-point improvement on Thursday, putting her over the NCAA provisional qualifying standard.

Fortner will likely compete in her third heptathlon of the spring at the Mountain West Conference Championships in San Diego, May 10-12.
