Lobos Hit The Road For Action Packed Weekend

The University of New Mexico track and field team begins a full weekend of competition this Thursday as the distance runners travel to California for the Mt. SAC Relays. The travel party consists entirely of men's and women's distance and mid-distance runners, including All-Americans Lee Emanuel and Chris Barnicle. This will be Emanuel and Barnicle's first outdoor appearance of the season.

Meanwhile, standouts Sandy Fortner and Deanna Young will travel to Fort Worth, Texas for the TCU Invitational. Several other sprinters, jumpers and throwers make up the travel roster. Events begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday and run through 3 p.m.

Events begin on Thursday and go through Saturday.

Weather: Conditions in Walnut, Calif. will be perfect for running with temperatures in the low 70s with light winds.

Lobo Watch: Making the trip is senior Nicky Archer and junior Ruth Senior. Archer will be running the 5,000m while Senior will run the 1500m. Archer has a career-best in the event of 16:35.12.

On the men's side, senior Jacob Kirwa will compete in the 5,000m. Kirwa currently holds the No. 8 spot on UNM's all-time performance list in the event with a time of 14:02.51. Junior David Bishop will run the 1,500m.

Weather: There's a chance the athletes will be waiting out the rain while in Fort Worth. Temperatures are projected to be in the low 70s with scattered thunderstorms.

Lobo Watch: Freshman De'Vron Walker has been impressive in his last few outings. The Los Angles, Calif. product recorded a 14.67 in 110m hurdles at the UTEP Invitational, good for No. 9 on UNM's all-time performance list in the event.

Young will compete in the long jump and run the third leg of the 4x100m relay. Fortner will run the first leg of the 4x100m relay and the second leg of the 4x400m relay.

Last Time Out

El Paso, Texas- The University of New Mexico track and field team had several athletes finish with top marks at the UTEP Invitational in El Paso, Texas last weekend. Senior Briana Paxton took first place in the discus throw. Paxton had a mark of 158-10 (48.43m) breaking her old personal best of 157-4 (47.96m). The mark keeps her in second place on UNM's all-time list in the discus.

Paxton wasn't the only one who took first place in her respective event. Senior Carolyn Boosey took first place in the 3,000m steeplechase. Boosey ran a time of 11:26.49. April Lewis, of in-state rival NMSU, took second with a time of 12:17.75.

Junior Ryan Steadman shaved time off his personal best (49.30) in the 400m dash with a time of 49.25, good for a fifth place finish.

Kelly Fortner recorded a new career-best in the pole vault with a mark of 11-9.75 (3.60m), beating her old mark of 11-07.75.

Also finishing in the top three in their respective events were:

• Senior Ashley Gibson finished second in the 800m with a time of 2:13.06

• Freshman Ashley Miknis finished second in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:03.73

• Freshman Sam Evans finished second in the 800m with a time of 1:52.45

• Freshman Sean Stam earned a second place finish in the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 9:32.81

Richard York finished second in the javelin throw with a mark of 185-7 (56.56m) and also set a new PR in the event
• Junior Kelly McCabe took third in the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 12:36.97

• Freshman Marin Schweigert finished third in the high jump with a mark of 5-3 (1.60m)

• Freshman Alex Kitterman finished third with a mark of 177-0 (53.96m) in the javelin throw

• Freshman De'Vron Walker finished third in the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.63
and set a personal record
• The men's 4x400 meter relay team of freshmen Derek Montoya, Sam Evans, Gabe Aragon and junior Ryan Steadman finished third with a time of 3:17.90
Josh Lovato set a new PR in the 400m hurdles
