Softball Hosts UTEP For Midweek Doubleheader

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Lobo softball team welcomes UTEP softball for a midweek doubleheader tomorrow, Tuesday March 11, at the Lobo softball field starting at noon.

SERIES VS. UTEP: New Mexico leads the all-time series with UTEP 9-7. In the last meeting, the Lobos took game one 6-5 after it was tied 5-5 going into the bottom of the seventh. In the second game, the Lobos scored four runs in the first that finished the Miners off. The Miners scored two runs off Lauren Soles but she kept them scoreless in five of the innings, striking out seven with no walks.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT: UTEP is 8-16 on the season and 1-2 in the Conference USA. Erika Arcuri currently leads the Miners with a .359 batting average (28-for-78). Ashley Eldridge also is play well, hitting .338 (24-for-71) and leads the Miners with 10 doubles and 19 RBIs. In the circle, Danielle Pearson leads the team with four wins, while Colleen Hohman’s 4.78 ERA is a team best. Pearson also lead in strikeouts with 27in 69 innings of work.

HOT STREAK: The Lobos have won six of their last seven games and had a breakout weekend at home against Detroit at the Lobo Classic winning all three of their games. The team had seven players that hit .300 or above and five players that hit .500 or above. The Lobos outscored their opponent 29-11 and posted a .429 batting average for the weekend. The Lobos put together 15 extra base hits on the weekend, including three home runs, 10 doubles and two triples.

OWNING THE PLATE: At the Lobo Classic, the MW Player of the Week from last week, Jasmine Casados, was one of the toughest out of the weekend, going 6-for-7 (.857) at the plate, striking out in the first game on Saturday for her only out of the weekend. She owned three runs scored, seven RBIs, two doubles, one triple, one home run and drew three walks. After a .125 start through the first 14 games, Casados is now hitting .327, third on the team. She owns four doubles, a triple, three home runs and 14 RBIs.

SOLES FOR THE WIN: Lauren Soles picked up two wins in the circle at the Lobo Classic with all of her innings coming in relief. She came in and through 3.2 scoreless innings to help the Lobos claim a 6-5 win over Detroit. On Saturday, she came into the first game and pitched four scoreless innings to help the Lobos to their 10-3 win. In 7.2 innings, she struck out six, allowed just four hits and walked two without allowing a run. She now has lowest earned run average on the team with a 3.23 ERA. In 13 innings, she has allowed seven runs off 13 hits with 13 strikeouts.
