ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Lobo softball team was behind early in both games but was too late in game one, coming up with a doubleheader split with UTEP in nonconference action on Tuesday afternoon at the Lobo Softball Field.
In game one, the Lobos were behind 4-0 after two innings. They came back with two runs in the third and two runs in the fourth to tie the game up at 4-4. With two outs in the third and Brandi Heimburg on first, Chelsea Anaya put one over the left field wall. In the fourth, the bases were loaded and Karissa Haleman drew an RBI walk to score Jasmine Casados. Heimburg then put one through the right side and scored Michala Erickson.
UTEP pushed across a run in the fifth but the Lobos matched it when Casados doubled to left center and later scored on an error by the UTEP shortstop.
The Miners plated two more in the sixth. The Lobos did their usual come-from-behind technique, but this time it wasn’t enough, scoring just one run in the bottom of the seventh.
Erickson and Jordan Sjostrand each went 2-for-4. Sjostrand and Anaya tallied two RBIs. Carrie Sheehan started the game for the Lobos and allowed four runs off eight hits while striking out three. Lauren Soles came in as relief in the third inning and allowed three runs off seven hits while striking out three and walking four in five innings of work.
The Miners got to starting Lobo pitcher Lisa Rodrigues in the first inning, scoring three runs. Rodrigues settled down and only allowed three more runs on the game.
The Lobo offense put together a five-run fourth inning to take a 5-4 lead. Mariah Rimmer started the rally with a single up the middle. Rimmer stole second and later scored on Erickson’s single to the shortstop. Mia Hignojos loaded the bases after reaching base on an error by UTEP’s second baseman. Sjostrand, who reached base by drawing a walk, and Erickson both scored off Heimburg’s double to left field. Heimburg and Hignojos later scored off Anaya’s single to right field.
After UTEP came back with one run in the sixth to tie the game up at 5-5, the Lobos put together a four run sixth to take the lead for good. Heimburg led off the inning with a single, stole second and advanced to third on Anaya’s single to right field. The right fielder bobbled the hit and Heimburg scored. Shelbie Franc bunted for a base hit to advance Anaya. The two scored off Naomi Tellez’s single to right field. Gabrielle Stacey, a pinch runner for Tellez, scored off Sjostrand’s single that found the green in left field.
UTEP pushed a run across in the seventh, but Rodrigues and the Lobos stopped the rally to claim the win.
Franc led the Lobos, going 3-for-4 at the plate. Heimburg and Sjostrand each went 2-for-3. Heimburg tallied two RBIs. Anaya and Erickson went 2-for-4, Anaya with two RBIs and Erickson with one RBI. In the circle, Rodrigues pitched a complete game, allowing six runs off 10 hits while striking out nine and walking two.
The Lobos are on the road this weekend, heading to Stillwater, Oklahoma for the Cowgirl Classic. UNM will matchup against Oklahoma State for a doubleheader on Friday and will play a single game against South Alabama on Saturday.
