ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Fresno State came out swinging and kept the University of New Mexico’s softball team’s offense off balance as the Lobos dropped the second game of the series 9-0 to the Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon at the Lobo Softball Field.

Fresno State manufactured four runs with two outs in the first inning. After giving up those runs, Lobo pitcher Lauren Soles threw five scoreless innings before the Bulldogs scored five more in the seventh. She collected three strikeouts and walked three in her loss, dropping her record to 4-5 in the circle.

The Lobos offense had a slow start. In the second inning, Mariah Rimmer led off with a single up the middle and Jasmine Casados was hit by a pitch on the next play to put runners at first and second. Jordan Sjostrand hit a ball that dropped in right in front of the centerfield but there was some confusion with the runners and Rimmer and Casados were out as a double play and Sjostrand’s potential hit turned into a fielder’s choice. UNM did not reach past second base the rest of the game.

Shelbie Franc and Rimmer tallied the only two hits for the Lobos. Franc’s hit came in the in the fourth when she led off the inning with a hard single through the left side.

The Lobos drop to 11-24 overall and 2-6 in the Mountain West. Fresno State improves to 20-13 on the season and 5-3 in conference play. The Lobos and the Bulldogs will play the final game of the three-game series tomorrow at 1 p.m.
