EL PASO, Texas -- The University of New Mexico Lobos softball team dropped Tuesday's contest to UTEP, 10-7, at Helen of Troy Field in El Paso, Texas.
UNM (25-19, 1-5) managed eight hits compared to the Miners' (15-36) 15 and committed one error in the contest. The Lobos and UTEP will play a doubleheader tomorrow starting at 11 a.m. MT.
New Mexico got a perfect 3-for-3 effort from senior Jessica Garcia. The Lobo catcher notched two RBIs in her first-inning homer to left field. It is the senior's 18th long ball and the two runs she drove in broke the UNM single-season record for RBIs. The previous record was 54 set by Danielle Cassara in 1999. Garcia's RBI total is 56 -- she ranks fifth in the nation in the category, averaging 1.26 per game.
Freshman Carrie Sheehan started in the circle for UNM. Sheehan (8-6) threw into the sixth inning, giving up 12 hits, seven earned runs, walking three and striking out four. Junior Kaela DeBroeck entered in the sixth inning, giving up three hits and one earned run while striking out one.
UTEP 10, Lobos 7
UTEP answered the Lobos in the bottom of the first, scoring two runs on three hits and a stolen base, and then used four hits and a Lobo miscue to tack on four more runs in the bottom of the third inning.
The Lobos trailed 6-2 until the top of the sixth. Garcia led off the inning and singled up the middle. Kerry Hodgins came in to pinch run for the Lobo catcher and she was advanced to second as Jessica Lujan-Dresslar drew a walk. Danielle Castro singled to right field and with no outs away, the bases were loaded with Lobos. Sheyl Guillermo battled through an eight-pitch at-bat, eventually drawing a walk and walking in Hodgins to make the score 6-3.
The next UNM batter struck out looking, but then Jordan Sjostrand drew a walk which sent Lujan-Dresslar home and added another Lobo run and moving the mark to 6-4.
It was top of the order for New Mexico and Carramusa hit a sacrifice fly to right field, driving in Castro and sending Guillermo to third, pulling the Lobos to within one run, but the next Lobo batter flied out and the inning ended with the lead still in the hands of the Miners, 6-5.
The nation's No. 1 home run hitter, Camilla Carrera, led off the bottom of the inning with a solo shot to left center--her 30th of the season. UTEP's next batter hit a double to center field and then Charissa Ballesteros drove in another Miner run with a single through the left side.
With the score now 8-5 and no outs accounted for in the inning, DeBroeck came in to relieve Sheehan. The Miners kept on rolling, however, scoring two more runs on two more hits and increasing their lead to 10-5 before the Lobo defense could put an end to the inning.
Garcia led off the final frame with a single through the left side--Amber Tracy came in to pinch run for her and was advanced to third off a double to right field by Lujan-Dresslar. Castro hit a deep single to left field and both UNM runners reached home, moving the score to 10-7. The mini rally was cut short as the next two Lobo batters struck out and grounded out.
