SAN DIEGO -- The University of New Mexico took a 1-0 loss at the hands of Mountain West foe San Diego State on Saturday afternoon, giving the Aztecs the series sweep over the Lobos.
UNM (16-23, 0-3 MW) outhit SDSU (22-12, 3-0 MW), six hits to four, but left 10 runners stranded whereas the Aztecs only left four runs out on the field.
Lauren Soles threw the entire game and in 23 batters faced, she allowed just four hits. The freshman gave up one earned run, walked one and struck out two.
"We were just lacking that clutch hit," head coach Erica Beach said. "We outhit them, had better defense and better pitching but struggled when runners were in scoring position. They pulled out a timely hit. It was a hard-fought game again from both sides."
Winning pitcher was Rebecca Arbino -- her third win over the Lobos in as many days. Arbino threw the final four innings and allowed just two hits while walking two and striking out six.
The game was scoreless through five and a half innings, but in the bottom of the sixth the Aztecs strung together two hits and a sacrifice bunt to put up the lone run of the game.
As in Thursday and Friday's games against San Diego State, the Lobos managed to have a runner reach base in all innings except one. In the second, fourth and fifth innings, UNM even had the bases loaded. However, timely hits were scarce and the Aztec pitching staff was sharp.
New Mexico returns to Albuquerque for a Mountain West weekend series with Boise State, April 5-7. Friday's game begins at 3 p.m. MT, at Lobo Field.
