CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – On the second day of the Mary Nutter Classic, the University of New Mexico softball team couldn’t find their groove, giving up a 14-run sixth inning to lose to Long Beach State 17-0 on Saturday evening.
The Lobos only had three hits in the game, coming from senior Chelsea Anaya, junior transfer Brandi Heimbur and freshman Jasmine Casados. Sophomore Mariah Rimmer and Casados drew walks in the second inning, but the Lobos struck out swinging to end the inning.
New Mexico struck out swinging in the third and fourth innings with runners on first and second.
Starting Lobo pitcher Carrie Sheehan threw a scoreless first inning before giving up two runs in the second. She threw two more scoreless innings to the 49ers but gave up one run in the fifth and gave the ball to sophomore Lauren Soles. Soles pitched two outs and gave up four runs before returning to the dugout.
Tess McPherson came in to finish the inning but couldn’t find her groove, giving up eight runs on four hits while walking two.
The Lobos will finish up the Mary Nutter Classic tomorrow against Cal Poly and No. 8 UCLA.
