WILMINGTON, Del. – University of New Mexico senior golfer James Erkenbeck defeated UCLA’s Pedro Figueiredo 2 and 1 in their match-play paring Sunday to help Team USA capture the 2013 Palmer Cup with a 20.5-9.5 victory at Wilmington Country Club.
Erkenbeck finished with 2.5 points for Team USA. Earlier in the day Iowa State’s Scott Fernandez (Iowa State) and Ben Taylor (Nova Southeastern University) defeated Erkenbeck and California’s Michael Weaver.
Erkenbeck and Figueiredo both were named recipients of the Michael Carter Award, which is presented to the Palmer Cup participant that best represents the qualities and ideals of sportsmanship, integrity and upholding of the game.
During their match, Erkenbeck claimed the first hole before Figueiredo won three and four to take the lead. Erkenbeck responded by reclaiming the lead with victories on the next two holes. Figueiredo tallied a birdie on No. 11 to move the match back to all square but Erkenbeck won the next three holes with birdie. Figueiredo managed to whittle the lead back to 1-down but Erkenbeck closed him out by winning No. 17.
Fernandez and Taylor downed Erkenbeck and Weaver for Europe’s first point of day. The Euro’s birdied the first hole to go 1-up and added birdie wins at Nos. 3 and 6. Erkenbeck and Weaver got back to 2-down thru 8. Europe would win the 10th and No. 14 with birdies.
