Golf Digest Top 50 Male Players To Watch

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- The University of New Mexico men's golf team and junior Gavin Green have earned some early buzz for the 2013-14 season, thanks to GolfDigest.com.

The publication on Thursday came out with a preseason Top 25 poll, and the Lobos were ranked No. 10 in the nation. It noted that UNM's final-round average in tournaments during the 2012-13 season was 72.33, which was third best in the nation.

The Lobos finished fifth in the nation last year after advancing to the eight-team stroke-play portion of the NCAA Championships in May.

Defending national champion Alabama, which beat the Lobos in their match-play quarterfinal at the NCAA Championship, is ranked No. 1 in the preseason poll.

Green was selected as one of the Top 50 Male Players to Watch by the publication. The native of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, was a third-team All-America selection last season, finishing with a 71.93-stroke average.

He and fellow junior Victor Perez (Semeac, France) are the returning starters from the 2012-13 Lobo team that advanced to the NCAA Championships for the first time since 2007.

UNM begins the new season Sept. 7-8 at the Gopher Invitational in Independence, Minn.
