University of New Mexico junior Gavin Green on Wednesday earned Mountain West Men’s Golfer of the Week for his victory at the Lone Star Invitational, the conference has announced.
Green, the No. 21 player in the nation according to the Golfweek.com/Sagarin rankings, erased a seven-stroke deficit in the final round of the San Antonio tournament, firing a 6-under 66 to finish the event at 6-under 210 (71-73-66). He then beat Sacramento State’s Owen Taylor on the second hole of sudden death for the win.
Green’s round helped the 21st-ranked Lobos capture the Lone Star team title, UNM’s third win this season.
It’s Green’s second MW Player of the Week honor in his last three events. He shared the honor with UNLV’s Kurt Kitayama after the two tied for second place at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters in Las Vegas, Nev.
The Lobos next will play at the Insperity Augusta State Invitational on April 5-6 in Augusta, Ga.
