Golfer Perez Rallies for 2nd-Place Tie at Southern Am

In Chattanooga, Tenn., University of New Mexico rising senior Victor Perez steadied himself on the back nine and watched all but one player fall behind him.

Perez was 1 under on the back nine, shot a 2-over 74 during Saturday’s final round and finished in a second-place tie at the 108th Southern Amateur Championship.

Perez shot a 287 (72-70-71-74) over the 72 holes at The Honors Course and finished three strokes behind winner M.J. Maguire from St. Petersburg, Fla., who is a rising senior at North Florida. Maguire started the day tied with Perez but shot a 1-under 71 to capture a three-stroke victory over Perez and Australia’s Geoff Drakeford.

Third-round leader Beau Hossler, a rising sophomore at Texas from Mission Viejo, Calif., fell off the pace with an 8-over 80 during the final round and finished in a three-way tie for fourth at even-par 288.

Perez ran into trouble on hole Nos. 5-7, shooting bogey-bogey-double bogey to fall to 1-over for the event. But Perez kept control of the round finished the last 11 holes with three birdies and a bogey.
