With the Glen Millican Lobos of 2012-13, golf was not a long walk spoiled. It was a long walk that ended with the Lobos pulling in a lot of spoils, trophies, honors and accolades.

And possibly it was the best season ever thrown out by a Lobo men's golf team.

Where to start? That's a tough call, so we'll start at the end. The Millican Lobos reached the Elite Eight of the 2013 NCAA Championships in Alpharetta, Ga., which meant the Lobos made the coveted match-play portion of the title chase.

The Lobos almost didn't make that final battle. UNM was in 27th place after 18 holes and 13 strokes away from the No. 8 spot. UNM was two strokes out of last (30th) place.

The Lobo rally was inspired, dramatic and not really that much of a surprise. These 2012-13 Lobos were exceptional. They earned their spot in Elite Eight in a four-team playoff for the final three spots.

"This is probably the best season I've ever been a part of, for a lot of reasons," said Millican.

The NCAA final was a nice feather in the Lobos' golf bag, but they also roared to the NCAA Columbus Regional title (UNM's third regional crown) behind the hot clubs of individual champion, James Erkenbeck.

Before that, the Lobo won their first Mountain West title since 2006. This was the first time UNM ever won an NCAA regional title and a league crown in the same season. UNM won five tournaments in 2012-13 and showed amazing consistency on the links finishing in the top five in 13 of 14 tournaments.

UNM also won its William H. Tucker Intercollegiate title by a tourney-record 29 shots. The Lobos finished with a 168-26-5 record against the schools they faced in their 14 tournaments.

The Lobos were loaded with talent, but Erkenbeck stole the show with his regional crown, by being named the Mountain West Player of the Year, and by earning a spot on the U.S. Palmer Cup team.

Erkenbeck, senior John Catlin, sophomore Gavin Green and sophomore Victor Perez all made the PING All-West Region team, as well as the All-Mountain West team. The four conference selections are Mountain West and UNM records.

"All the credit goes to the players," said Millican.
