As the University of New Mexico men’s golf team gets ready in Hawaii for the three-day John Burns Intercollegiate later this week, Lobo alumni represented the program well in professional events across the Western Hemisphere over the weekend.

Charlie Beljan, who competed for the Lobos from 2003-04 season to the 2006-07 season for UNM, finished tied for 12th with an 8-under 276 at the PGA Tour’s Northern Trust Open in Pacific Palisades, California. He finished seven shots behind Bubba Watson and earned $127,300 for his efforts.

Beljan made national headlines in 2012 when he had to be rushed from the course at the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Classic to a hospital because of what doctors described as a panic attack.  He ended up winning the tournament for his first PGA Tour victory.

The Los Angeles Times quoted Beljan after the third round of the Northern Trust Open on Saturday, saying that the better Beljan plays, the more media inquiries he’ll get to discuss his anxiety.

He said he’s more than willing to talk about his condition to help others with anxiety.

"Every week, people express how grateful they are to me that I shed a little light on it," he said. "My mailbox at home still fills up with letters from people … just saying how neat it was and how thankful. They struggle with it.

"I just hope that, one day, somebody can find the answer how to take care of it."

Meanwhile, Tommy Armour III (1979-80 through 1980-81) captured an 11th-place tie at the Champions Tour’s ACE Group Classic in Naples, Fla. Armour shot a 7-under 209 and finished seven strokes behind winner Kirk Triplett. Armour earned $32,000.

Armour is a veteran of two PGA Tour wins and four Champions Tour runner-up finishes.

And in Bogotá, Colombia, Wil Collins (1998-99 through 2001-02) shot a 3-under 210 to finish in a tie for 41st place at the Web.com Tour’s Pacific Rubiales Colombia Championship Presented by Claro. Collins was 11 shots behind winner Alex Cejka and picked up $2,775 during the three-day event.

Collins finished fifth in the PGA Tour Canada’s Order of Merit in 2013, earning him Web.com Tour status for 2014.
