In Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, University of New Mexico junior golfer Gavin Green got the start he wanted during Thursday’s first round of the Maybank Malaysian Open. He just needs to work on his finish.
The Kuala Lumpur native shot a 2-over 74 and is tied for 78th place after the first 18 holes of the European Tour event, which was suspended with some players still on the course during the first round. Green trails Malaysian Open leader Lee Westwood, who fired an impressive 7-under 65 Thursday, by nine strokes.
Green had back-to-back birdies on hole nos. 4-5 to get to 2 under par. But consecutive bogeys on hole nos. 7-9 put at 1 over on the front nine.
He got back to even par on the 10th hole but then bogeyed the par-4 14th and the par-4 17th to finish at 2 over.
Green finished 2 under on the four par-5 holes on Thursday. He was even par on the par-3s but was 4-over on the par-4s.
The second round takes place Friday.
