Albuquerque, N.M. – The Lobo Men’s tennis program kicks off its new season as they send four players to compete in the University of North Carolina-Wilmington Collegiate Invitational held this weekend, September 6-8.
The Lobos are sending James Hignett, Sam Iftikhar, Andy Van Der Vyver, and Mitch McDaniels to compete in the first tournament of the 2013-14 season. All of these athletes are returning players to the Lobo Tennis team.
McDaniels and Van Der Vyver will compete together in a doubles match to start off the tournament on Friday morning. Additionally, all four players will compete in singles matches throughout the weekend. Associate head coach Bart Scott will be accompanying the players on their trip and will be their main support and mentor while competing at the UNCW Invite.
The UNCW Invitational will begin each day at 9:30 at Empie Park near UNCW Campus. Other schools participating in the tournament include East Carolina, Liberty, UT-Chattanooga, North Carolina Central and VCU. VCU (#30), UNCW (#72), and UNM (#72) all finished in the top-75 ITA rankings last year making this a very competitive start to the season for every team.
The invitational championship will be held Sunday morning beginning with doubles and followed with the singles championship. The Lobos are hoping that their pre-season training will take them to the final match on Sunday.
The UNCW Collegiate Invitational is the first of eight tournaments that the Men’s tennis team will be competing in this fall.
