ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- The University of New Mexico men’s tennis team dropped a 4-1 match to No. 41 Texas Tech on Sunday afternoon at the Linda Estes Tennis Complex.

The No. 56 Lobos lost the doubles point to start the match and couldn’t get any steady energy going in the remainder of the competiton. UNM battled until the end in every match, but TTU always managed to sneak ahead for the victory.

“Credit to Texas Tech today,” associate head coach Bart Scott said. “The difference was small today between the two teams and we had some opportunities on certain courts.”

Doubles play was tight, but the Lobos couldn’t seem to find that extra surge of intensity that they needed to put them ahead. TTU clinched the point after winning 8-7 in the No.1 spot and 8-6 in the No. 2 position.

The Lobos gained some momentum to start singles play, but once again came up short.

Competing for only the second time this season, Bryan Cunningham was the first off the court for the Lobos. He dropped a 6-0, 6-3 decision in the No. 6 position.

After leading for the majority of the first set, Andrew Van Der Vyver eventually fell to Johann Willems, 7-6, 6-2, to give TTU a 3-0 lead.

Rodolfo Jauregui put UNM on the board with a win in the No. 3 spot. Unfortunately, Hayden Sabatka fell in the No. 2 position just moments after. The Red Raiders clinched the match with a final score of 4-1.

Samir Iftikhar’s and James Hignett’s matches were declared unfinished.

“Tech played with a bit more poise and went for it,” Scott said. “Our guys fought hard and played together. We’re excited to get ready for big matches next week.”

Sunday’s match was the Lobo’s last home event until April 11th. UNM will spend the next month traveling to Georgia State, New Mexico State, and the University of Nevada- Las Vegas.
