ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The UNLV Rebels managed to squeeze out of the Lobos' early tight grip over them by winning the last three singles matches left on court, to ultimately win the match in close contest, 4-3. UNM drops to 9-11 overall while UNLV improves to 14-5.
James Hignett and Mads Hegelund had a tough matchup against UNLV's Gilad Berman and Carlos Di Laura. The two were neck and neck up to until the tiebreak where the UNM duo pulled away from the competition to clinch the doubles point 9-8 (7-4).
The Lobos had the momentum on their side as they headed into the singles portion of the match.
Ace Matias from UNLV got the early lead at number one singles over Samir Iftikhar taking the match 6-2, 6-3. The score was now tied at 1-1.
The Lobos, however, would bounce back fairly quickly taking the third and fifth court. UNM had the lead at 3-1 and only needed one more point to notch the win under their belt. UNLV had other plans.
UNLV ended up taking court number four 6-4, 6-4 over Hegelund. The score was now 3-2.
The last matches on the court were number two and number six singles. Both would finish within minutes of each other.
Phillips at number two clinched the first set 6-1 over Berman but Berman picked up his game to win the match 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.
Du Toit, after falling 6-0 in the first set to Johannes Markel, found his groove in the second set to pull out a 6-4 win. His comeback story was cut short by Markel who got the edge on him in the third set to win and clinch the dual match 6-0, 4-6, 6-4.
The Lobos will now prepare for their last home match of the season against Fresno State on April 7, 2013 at 11 a.m. This will also be Senior Day as the team honors Phillips and Berg for all their hard work and dedication to the men's tennis program for the past four years.
