Lobos Have Successful First Day at UNCW Invite

Albuquerque, N.M. – The Lobo men’s tennis team finished their first day at the University of North Carolina-Wilmington Collegiate Invitational with an overall 7-2 record.

The University of New Mexico started the day with a loss as doubles team James Hignett and Samir Iftikhar lost their first match, 8-6. Jorge Azuero and Dillon Segur from Liberty University upset the number three seed UNM duo. Hignett and Iftikhar will face Nicolas Soriano and Patriek Wolterbeek from Eastern Carolina University on Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. (EST)

The Lobos got the momentum going in their second doubles match up of the day. Mitch McDaniels and Andy Van Der Vyver had a slow start but came back to upset the number four seed duo from ECU, 9-8. They will face the Virginia Commonwealth’s doubles team, Wilder Pimentel and Michal Voscek, on Saturday morning.

In the Flight A singles bracket, Iftikhar had a successful start in his matches. He began by defeating Egon Samaai from Liberty University, 6-0, 6-1. Iftikhar went on to rout his second round opponent, UNCW’s Kaue Pereira, 6-4, 6-4. He will face VCU’s Jean Baptiste Mateo on Saturday morning.

McDaniels started his singles bracket with a first round lost to VCU’s Voseck, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3. He went on to win his second match of the day against Stephan Charles-Donatien from North Carolina Central University, 6-1, 6-4. On Saturday afternoon McDaniels will face Soriano from ECU at 2:30 p.m. (EST)

Van Der Vyver won both of the singles matches that he competed in today. In his first match of the day he defeated Thomas Persico from NCCU, 6-3 6-4. He later went on to take down the number four seed of his bracket, Azuero from LIB, 6-3, 6-3. He will be competing in the semi-finals on Sunday.

Hignett began his singles matches with a first round by, as he was the second seed of his bracket. In his second round matchup he beat Mario Martinez from ECU, 6-4, 6-2. James will play in the semifinals on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. (EST)

The Lobos overall had a solid first day at the UNCW Invitational and will hopefully continue that success on Saturday for day two of the tournament. Friday’s victories put the Lobos in a great position to win the invitational championship held on Sunday.
