ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico’s Samir Iftikhar is moving onto the second round of the 2013 Saint Francis ITA Men’s All-American Championship after defeating his first opponent on Monday evening in Tulsa, Okla.
Iftikhar had a successful opening day at the Michael D. Tennis Center as he took the victory over Romain Kalaydjian of the University of San Diego, 6-3, 6-3.
“It was a solid performance from Sam,” said associate head coach Bart Scott. “He was in charge from start to finish and never let up. Sam played very well, but not his best by any means, which is a good thing. Champions find ways to win when they are not playing their best tennis.”
Iftikhar faces North Carolina’s Ronnie Schneider in the second round of the Qualifying draw on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. (CST). Schneider is expected to be a tough opponent.
“It should be a grind of a match today, and Sam will have to play well if he’s going to have a chance to win,” said Scott. “It should be a good match.”
Iftikhar has to win two more singles matches in order to make it to the ITA Championship.
