ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Despite untimely rain mid-match, the No. 56 Lobos power through to take down the Brigham Young Cougars, 6-1, on Friday afternoon.

The University of New Mexico men’s tennis team defeated its regional rival after claiming the doubles point as well as five of six singles matches. UNM now holds an all-time record of 27-36-1 against BYU.

The Lobos opened the match by winning the doubles point for the seventh time this season. No. 3 doubles team Rodolfo Jauregui and Mitchell McDaniels picked up the first win of the match for UNM after defeating Jeremy Bourgeois and Sterling Galli, 8-4. A BYU win in the No. 1 position quickly evened out the score.

The doubles point came down to the match up between Hayden Sabatka and Andrew Van Der Vyver and Francis Sargeant and Matthew Pearce in the No. 3 spot.  After battling through a seven-point tiebreaker, Sabatka and Van Der Vyver clinched the point for the Lobos.

Sabatka and Van Der Vyver also came through for the Lobos in singles play. The two Lobos both tallied quick wins in singles to give UNM an early 3-0 lead.

As the remaining four matches continued to play, Mother Nature stepped in and forced the match to move indoors. The rain interruption didn’t seem to phase the Lobo’s and their competative energy.

Jauregui quickly clinched the match for the UNM with a big 7-5, 6-1 win in the No. 3 spot. Hignett and Iftikhar also pulled through with huge wins in the No. 1 and No. 5 positions. Hignett defeated Pearce in a two set battle, 7-6, 6-2. Aftering losing in a tight tiebreaker in the first set, Iftikhar came back to defeat BYU's Sargeant in the No. 1 spot, 6-7, 6-2, 1-0 (2).

McDaniels was the only Lobo who suffered a loss against BYU. After losing 7-5 in a close first set, McDaniels couldn’t seem to make a come back in the No. 6 spot.

The Lobos are now 14-4 on the season.
