FRESNO, Calif. – New Mexico’s Hayden Sabatka has been named the 2014 Mountain West Men’s Tennis Freshman of the Year as announced at the MW Championship opening banquet on Wednesday evening.
The Denver native lead the Lobos primarily in the No. 2 singles position finishing with a 17-7 regular season, 23-11 overall record. When adding in his success from the fall tournament season, Sabatka wraps up his first regular season with a final record of 24-11. Rodolfo Jauregui is the only Lobo ahead of Sabatka, with a 29-13 finish. Sabatka finished with an 8-8 record in doubles this season.
Sabatka was also the only UNM competitor to earn a Mountain West Player of the Week award during the 2014 season.
The Lobos also had a few players receive All-Conference honors. Sabatka and teammate Samir Iftikhar earned a spot on the All-Conference team for singles. This is Iftikhar’s second career All-MW honor.
Iftikhar and James Hignett were named to the All-Conference Team for their success as a doubles team. The UNM duo finished the regular season with 6-7 doubles record giving them the most doubles victories on the team. This was the first All-MW Doubles award for both of them.
The early conference accolades may just give the Lobos the positive energy they need as they prep for the big conference tournament taking place this week. The MW Championships are being hosted by the Fresno State Bulldogs April 23-27 at the Sierra Sport & Racquet Club.
The Lobos earned the second overall seed in the tournament. They will face off against No. 7 seed Air Force in the quarterfinals at 2 p.m. PT on Thursday.
Boise State earned the top seed for the tournament and will square off against eighth-seeded Utah in the quarterfinals.
