ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --The University of New Mexico men's tennis team defeated No. 75 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Sunday afternoon improving to 2-0 on the season.
UNM secured the doubles point with wins from Johnny Parkes and Miles Bugby and Graeme Kassautzki and Joe Wood at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. Kassautzki and Wood dropped a 7-3 lead to David Pace and James Langford, who came within one, 7-6, before the UNM duo put the win away, 8-6. Parkes and Bugby never trailed in their set against Dmitry Novikov and Mikhail Pavlov, winning 8-5.
Freshmen Carl Ho and Phil Anderson collected their first collegiate wins, while Johnny Parkes continued to dominate at the No. 1 position to pace UNM in singles play. Ho, who trailed Jaume Farras 0-2 in the first set, came back to win 6-3 and took the second set, 6-4. Anderson, who was not in the Lobos' opening match lineup on Friday, defeated Pace easily, 6-1, 6-3.
Parkes collected his second win of the spring season and sixth of the year with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Pavlov.
"It is a great start and great to get this kind of momentum," head coach Alan Dils said. "It is exactly what we need heading into the tournament next weekend. Johnny is a good leader, pure and simple. Carl did a great job of listening and building off of Friday. Phil got a chance today and he took advantage of the opportunity."
UNM travels to Columbus, Ohio, for the ITA Team Indoor Expansion qualifier Jan. 31-Feb. 2. The Lobos meet up with Virginia Tech on Saturday with the potential to play No. 1 Ohio State.
