ALBUQUERQUE, NM -- The University of New Mexico men’s tennis team recorded its first conference win of the season after sweeping doubles and winning five of six singles contests against Air Force on Sunday afternoon. The Lobo’s 6-1 win over the Falcons moves UNM to 10-3 on the season.
It was No. 3 doubles team Rodolfo Jauregui and Mads Hegelund that got the momentum going early for the Lobos. They teamed up for a 6-2 win over Andy Jackson and Steven Young. No. 2 Samir Iftikhar and James Hignett also pulled through with a doubles win and earned the point for the Lobos.
"Nice to get another win over a quality opponent," Associate Head Coach Bart Scott said. "Coach O and Jeff do a great job over there so we're happy we came away with a convincing win at home."
Singles play was a bit more of a battle for the Lobos, but they still managed to claim five wins. Sabatka, Hignett, and Iftikhar all picked up easy victories against the Falcons, but Jauregui and Hegelund both took their matches into a third set. Fortunately, both Lobos managed to come out ahead.
McDaniels was the only Lobo to fall in singles action, losing 6-3, 6-3 to Young. Sunday’s loss puts him at 2-3 on the season. The junior from Arizona has had six matches declared as unfinished this season.
"In singles, the guys in the west bubble came out firing right away and won 18 of the first 19 games. Those were our leaders over there," Scott said. "We keep getting closer and closer to becoming a complete team. We take two steps forward and half a step back. We will try and clean up a few issues as we prepare for a dangerous Idaho team on Tuesday."
UNM is now 37-3 against the Falcons.
The Lobos play again on Tuesday where they take on the Idaho Vandals at 11 a.m. MTN at the Linda Estes Tennis Complex.
