Lobos Look To Snap Losing Streak

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- The University of New Mexico women’s tennis team looks to snap a four-match losing streak when they host Colorado on Friday and Ball State on Saturday at the Linda Estes Tennis Complex.

In the last two weeks, the Lobos have dropped four matches to ITA ranked opponents, including two top-20 teams. Two of the four matches were tight, heartbreaking losses for the young UNM team as they came so close to pulling off two different upsets. Needless to say, the Lobos are hungry for a win.

UNM may be hungrier than ever for a victory, but their schedule doesn’t get much lighter.

“This is another great opportunity weekend for our team,” head coach Erica Jasper said. “Usually coming off 4 tough losses a team would be frustrated, however I think as a group we are excited for another opportunity to take on a ranked team like Colorado and a rising program in Ball State.”

The No. 54 CU Buffaloes are coming in on Friday to face off against the Lobos at 4 p.m. MT. CU is currently on a hot streak, winning its last three matches. UNM will have to play with intensity from start to finish if they want to keep the 6-3 Buffaloes under control.

How the Lobos do against the Buffs could be a decent projection of where they will fit in, in the Mountain West. CU currently has wins against three of UNM’s conference opponents including Wyoming, Colorado State, and Air Force. CU did drop a 4-3 match to Boise State earlier in the season.

The battle continues on Saturday when the Lobos host the Cardinals at 3 p.m. MT. This will be the first time in program history that the two teams meet up.

The 8-3 Cardinals will also be a tough opponent for UNM. BSU has only lost three matches this season with two of them coming from top ranked teams. Experience shouldn’t be too much of an issue as the Cardinals are only bringing three upperclassmen to the court, compared to the Lobo’s two.  It should be a pretty even match up between the two teams.

“The focus has been on improvement week to week—which for a team as young as ours is important as we want to be playing our best tennis come April,” Jasper said. “As a coach I couldn’t be happier with the progress of all our freshmen as well as the leadership of our two upperclassmen.  If we can band together for these two matches and focus on what we can control, the results will take care of themselves and we will continue on this path of improvement!”

Results will be posted on golobos.com at the end of the match.
