Blankers and Bezdickova Earn MW Honors

FRESNO, Calif. – It has been a big week for New Mexico freshman Lizette Blankers and senior Michaela Bezdickova as the two Lobos teamed up for a total of five post-regular season awards.

Blankers has been named the 2014 Mountain West Co-Freshmen of the Year as announced by the conference on Wednesday at the 2014 MW Championship opening banquet. She is sharing the honor with San Jose State’s Gaelle Rey.

Blankers is much deserving of the award as she concluded the regular season with the most singles victories on the team. Playing mainly in the No. 2 singles spot, she went 13-8 in the spring and 11-5 in the fall tournament season to finish the regular season with an impressive record of 24-13 and 5-0 in conference play.

The Netherlands native was also named to the 2014 All-Conference team along with Bezdickova. This was the fourth All-MW honor of Bezdickova’s career. The All-Conference team was made up of the top-16 singles players in the MW.  

The MW awards did not stop there. Blankers and Bezdickova also received All-Conference honors as a doubles team. The duo posted a 14-6 doubles record for the regular season. This was Bezdickova’s third career All-Conference doubles honor.

Additionally, Bezdickova was named the Lobo Club Scholar Athlete of the Year as announced by the Lobo Club on Monday.

Bezdickova graduates next month from the UNM Anderson School of Management.
