LOS ANGELES, CALIF. - The Lobos were close in overcoming a tough battle against Cal State Northridge but fell in a close battle 4-3. The Lobos are now 5-7 overall and will play next on March 16, 2013 against Loyola Marymount.

At the start of the match, the Lobos took an early lead in doubles with the duo of Sarah Mahboob Khan and Michaela Oldani defeating Corinne Schnyder and Jessica Warren with a score of 8-1.

The next to come off the court was the duo of Nikolina Grbac and Kristin Eggleston falling to Lorraine Cheung and Maria Pistalu with a score of 8-1.

The doubles point was decided by the win at number one by Cal State Northridge's Sabrina Man-Son-Hing and Anna Yang over UNM duo of Michaela Bezdickova and Laura Richardson with a score of 8-4.

Cal State Northridge took the doubles point but UNM was already preparing to take the next six potential points in singles.

At number one singles, Bezdickova, recently named Mountain West Player of the Week, upheld that honor by continuing her win streak defeating Pistalu in a three set match. The first set, UNM lost in a close tiebreak 7-6. The next two, Bezdickova was determined to win and she did in good fashion with a final score of 6-7, 6-3, 6-1.

At the second court, there was more pressure than can be described as this was the match to decide the overall win. Grbac fell to Yang pushing the match to three sets. Yang won the first in close fashion 7-5, but Grbac battled back to take the next 6-3.  With the pressure on, Yang overcame to defeat Grbac with a score of 6-1.

At the third position, Khan faced Man-Son-Hing falling 6-0, 6-3.

At the number four spot, Eggleston took on Cheung falling with a score of 6-1, 6-3.

Richardson defeated her opponent Schnyder at number five singles with a score of 6-3, 6-2.

At number six singles, Oldani dropped the first set to Alexis Marquez with a score of 6-3. Oldani took all of her hard-earned experience in these types of situations to rally back to take the second set 6-2. The third set, Oldani kept her momentum going for her and dropped only one more game to finish the match with a final score of 3-6, 6-2, 6-1.

"We had a ton of chances today, which is pretty amazing seeing that we played so-so in doubles and lost 5 first sets," Head Coach Erica Perkins Jasper said. "I was definitely very proud of how we fought as a team and put ourselves back into the match after being down. The challenge continues to be finding a way to start a bit better in doubles and singles--and we will continue to work on it!"

The Lobos fell in a close battle to Cal State Northridge with a score of 4-3 and will travel to face Loyola Marymount on Saturday.
