Albuquerque, N.M.--- Dedication and talent is not only seen amongst the players of the Lobo women’s tennis team, but in the coaching staff as well.
Assistant Tennis Coach Kelcy McKenna sets an admirable example for her players as she works toward her own tennis goals this week in the US Open National Playoffs taking place in New Haven, CT.
McKenna, who is an Arizona State Tennis Alumni, will be competing for a chance to earn a spot in the US Open Qualifying Tournament and ultimately towards a shot at the main draw of the 2013 US Open. McKenna qualified for the playoffs after she won the US Open National Playoff Southwest Section Qualifying Tournament in May. She won a total of four matches in singles and mixed doubles.
The playoffs will showcase the best of the best when it comes to tennis talent. The Mixed Doubles Championship features 26 players (13 teams) and the Women’s Singles Championship has a total of 12 individual competitors. Among these 38 athletes, there are several different skill levels from several different countries that will be competing. Viewers can expect to see everything from collegiate coaches to USTA Pro Circuit’s best athletes. McKenna, who was ranked No. 3 in the nation while at ASU, will definitely be a competitor to look out for.
McKenna will be playing in both singles and doubles matches while in New Haven. For the first round of the singles draw, she will face Amy Sergeant from Great Britain. Sergeant qualified for the playoffs after winning the Florida Section Qualifying Tournament. A win in the singles championship would allow McKenna to compete in the US Open Qualifying Tournament as a wild card. The tournament will be played in Flushing, N.Y.
As for McKenna’s mixed doubles match, she is paired with Stevie Robertson, a former player from Boise State. By winning the mixed doubles playoff title, that would also give McKenna and Robertson a guaranteed spot in the 2013 US Open as a wild card.
