The Koreans are coming.

The New Mexico Lobos – men and women – plan to meet and greet them with smiles and warm New Mexico salutations and then maybe not be as nice on the other side of the tennis court.

“It should be competitive, high-level tennis,” said Erica Perkins Jasper, the UNM women’s coach. “I have eight new players, so it’s a great opportunity to see some of them in a dual situation. We can mix things around, have some fun, too.”

Said Alan Dils, the Lobo men’s coach: “I hear their guys are pretty good.  We hope so.  It’s great to get some matches in and get to know some players from Korean.  You don’t get to see players from that area very often.”

The dual matches between Lobos and the Korean Junior National Team (U18) has dual start times, too.  The teams will square off at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Linda Estes Tennis Complex and then go at it again at 2 p.m.

The Korean National Team has six players – three men and three women.  The two sessions will include six singles matches (three men, three women) followed by two doubles matches (one men, one women) and a mixed (co-ed) doubles match.

“It will be fun environment with both Lobo teams out there,” said Dils.  "It raises the atmosphere.  There will more excitement and intensity with the two teams there.”

Both Dils and Perkins Jasper are looking at a lot of new faces in 2013-14 so any competitive looks they can get at their teams will be helpful down the road.

The women’s team will be led by senior Michaela Bezdickova and junior Susanna Kuuttila, who likely will redshirt the 2013-14 season

The rest of Perkins Jasper’s 10-player roster features seven freshmen and a transfer from Utah.  Perkins Jasper said Bezdickova probably will play in two singles matches because the UNM senior is preparing for the upcoming All-American invite.

“This is a good opportunity for us,” said Perkins Jasper.  “Not very often do you have opportunities to play exhibition matches that don’t count toward your dates (official events).  This is a nice one.  Plus, we rarely get to do anything in a co-ed situation with the men’s team, so we’re looking forward to that setting.”

Dils will take to the court in 2013-14 with a few more veterans – Mads Hegelund, James Hignet, Samir Iftikhar,  Mitch McDaniels and Andrew Van Der Vyyer – but he also has to figure in some youth for his lineup.  Dils will have six freshmen in 2013-14.

The Korean Team will be coached by Doug MacCurdy, a former Lobo, who also played at Highland High in Albuquerque.
