ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico’s women’s tennis team went undefeated in singles play on day one of the 2013 Falcon Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Lizette Blankers, Meredith Hopson, Dominique Dulski, Emily Olivier, Rachana Bhat, and Susan Baklini all won their first singles match of the three-day tournament at the United States Air Force Academy. All six Lobos have advanced to the next round of their brackets and will continue to work towards the championship spot over the next two days.
UNM almost had a perfect record in doubles play as well. The Lobos ended day one at the Falcon Invite with a 4-1 overall doubles record. Two of three Lobo duos took the victory in their doubles matches, but Baklini and Blankers came up short against West Virginia’s Hailey Barrett and Ikttesh Chahal, 8-4.
“Overall we had a very solid day in doubles and in singles,” said head coach Erica Jasper. “As a group we are still struggling at times with maintaining our energy and focus, however today we made some nice strides in that area and picked up some solid wins.”
Doubles play will resume on Saturday at 9:00 a.m. (MTN). Singles play will begin on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. (MTN).
“We have some tough matches tomorrow,” said Jasper. “We will need to work even harder and demand more from ourselves to get the results we want.”
