ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico’s women’s tennis team wrapped up its fall tournament season with the 2013 Lobo Fall Invitational at Linda Estes Tennis Center on Nov. 3.
Sunday marked the final day of the pre-season event hosted by the Lobos. The invite participants spent the day competing in a series of championship matches.
Unfortunately, UNM didn’t claim any championship titles, but several Lobos headed home with impressive wins and a few consolation titles.
UNM finished strong with 4-2 record on day three. Emily Olivier was the only Lobo competing in a finals match on Sunday, but came up short in a hard fought three-match battle against Colorado’s Alex Aiello, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4. Susan Baklini, Rachana Bhat, Lizette Blankers, and Misa Bezdickova all picked up a consolation win on the final day of the tournament.
“Overall we competed really well today,” head coach Erica Jasper said. “It’s nice to see that we were able to regroup after a bad first day and get better each day after.”
The young Lobo team will continue to train over the course of the next few months and prepare for the upcoming season.
“We’ll continue to work on managing details during the off-season realizing that a lot of freshmen will be contributing this spring, and we will have to show better poise and maturity if we want to play to the best of our ability,” Jasper said.
The first match of the 2013-14 women’s tennis spring season is currently scheduled for Jan. 25 against the University of Texas-San Antonio.
“This is a great young team with a ton of competitive fire and talent, and I have a lot of confidence in our ability to improve,” Jasper said.
