ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The New Mexico women’s tennis team captured two wins in its home debut doubleheader against Grand Canyon and Colorado State-Pueblo. With the pair of wins, the Lobos improve to a 3-1 on the season.

UNM started off the day with a 4-3 win over the GCU Antelopes. The Lobos kicked off the dual match with a win in doubles play after battling through two tough matchups. Meredith Hopson and Natasha Smith won the first doubles matchup for the Lobos and teammates Misa Bezdickova and Lizette Blankers followed in their footsteps.

GCU put up a fight in the singles competition and won three of the six matches. Fortunately, UNM was able to hang on and take the win. Blankers, Smith, and Hopson all contributed wins to the Lobo’s victory. Bezdickova battled Priscilla Annoual through a tough match before losing in a tie-breaker.

Without hesitation the Lobos hit the court for their second match of the day. It only took UNM a little under two hours to pick up another win. The Lobos swept the Division II CSUP TimberWolves, 7-0. Bezdickova, Rachana Bhat, and Madison Porter all recorded their first wins of the season.

The Lobos play another home court doubleheader on Sunday against Northern Arizona and Western New Mexico.

Head Coach Erica Jasper’s Post-Match Thoughts:

Against GCU:

“I still can’t decide if I am disappointed or thrilled with our doubles today. We started off with terrible energy and sloppy execution and dug ourselves a pretty deep hole at all three spots.  That’s all about preparation—and we really didn’t prepare the way we needed to and it nearly got us.  That being said, we competed unbelievably well when we were down; I think between courts #1 and #3 we fought of 6 to 8 total match points while #2 ran off 5 straight games after getting down 4-1.  So I am exceptionally proud of this team’s competitive fire.  I thought we did a nice job regrouping in the singles and coming out with much more discipline, and we took care of business where we needed to.  Grand Canyon is a feisty team and experienced—and it showed.  We’re definitely happy to pull off that win.  In terms of individual efforts, Meredith Hopson really had a great day—she has put a ton of work on the court since coming back from an injury, and it is paying off!

Against CSU-Pueblo:

“After a tough 4-3 match, it was great to see how we came out ready to work in the second match.  It was also great to be able to play some different players in our line-up—I was excited for Rachana Bhat and Madison Porter to pick up their first dual match wins as Lobos.”
