ALBUQUERUQUE, N.M. -- The Lobos are heading south this weekend to play their final pair of non-conference matches. The University of New Mexico women’s tennis team opens the weekend with a big match against in-state rival New Mexico State in Las Cruces on Friday and finishes with a match up against the UT-El Paso Miners on Saturday at the El Paso Tennis Club.

“These are two big matches for us this weekend as they are our final two matches before we start Mountain West play,” head coach Erica Jasper said. “I’ve been exceptionally proud of the team and how these young women have worked together each day to get better and better and this is yet another for us to test ourselves.”

This will be the second meeting between the Lobos and the Aggies during the 2013-14 season. UNM participated in the 2013 Aggie Invitational earlier in the fall tournament season where the Lobos claimed two tournament titles. Rachana Bhat and Madison Porter picked up a doubles championship title and Lizette Blankers earned a title in singles play.

The Lobos defeated the Aggies last year in regular season play in a tight 4-3 match.

The Aggies have had a rough start to the spring season as they sit at a 4-8 record. The NMSU roster includes nine international players, one N.M. native, and four upperclassmen.

“As a coaching staff, we’ve asked a lot of such a new, young team all spring, yet they never cease to amaze me with their ability to step up,” Jasper said. “I think Monday’s loss to UNT definitely stung, so we’ll have some Lobos motivated to get back out on the court to take care of business.”

UNM then heads to UTEP for their final regular season match. The Lobos have won their last three matches against the Miners and hold an all-time record of 27-1 against them. Needless to say, UTEP is hungry for a win.

The Miners (8-9) are bringing a seven-member lineup that includes five upperclassmen, so they definitely have the advantage of experience in this match.

“Much like our team, NMSU and UTEP are both significantly improved from last season,” Jasper said. “Both teams are well-coached and competitive. Once again, we’ll have to be at our best mentally and physically to put ourselves in the position to win.”

Neither matches have live scoring available. Head to golobos.com at the end of each match to find full results.
