ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- The University of New Mexico women’s tennis team will open Mountain West Conference play this weekend with a pair of road matches against Boise State and Utah State. The Lobos finished the non-conference season with an impressive 11-6 record.
UNM added two more wins to their record last weekend after defeating New Mexico State and UT- El Paso on the road. The Lobos are looking to continue their win streak as they begin conference action and travel for the first time without head coach Erica Jasper. The team will be coached by assistant coach Kelcy McKenna and Deputy AD Tim Cass while Jasper and husband Colin are expecting their 2nd child.
The Lobos square off against BSU on Friday at 2 p.m. MT. The Broncos are currently ranked 4th in the MW. UNM is trailing right behind them at the No. 5 position.
The Broncos are coming off a two-loss streak, including a conference loss to San Diego State. Unlike the Lobos, BSU has already played a handful of MW matches. The Broncos are 8-8 on the season and 1-2 in conference.
The Lobos have not defeated the Broncos since 2008.
UNM finishes the weekend with a match against the newest member of the MW. The Lobos face the Aggies on Sunday at 11 a.m. MT at the Sports Academy Raquet Club.
The Aggies are currently in last place in the MW standings as they sit at the No. 11 position. Head coach Sean McInerney’s eight-player lineup includes seven underclassmen, which will allow for a pretty even match up with the young Lobo squad.
Full results from both matches will be posted on golobos.com at the end of each match.
