Lobos Win Eight Straight With Air Force Victory

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The University of New Mexico won it's eight-consecutive match and earned it's first Mountain West conference victory of the season with a 3-1 decision at Air Force on Thursday night.

The Lobos took the first two sets, 25-17 and 25-21 before dropping the third, 21-25. New Mexico gutted out a fourth-set win, 26-24.

The Falcons drop to 2-9 overall and 0-1 in league play.

New Mexico's next match is the Rio Grande Rivalry in Las Cruces, N.M., on Monday, Sept. 23rd. Start time is 7 p.m. MT.

Chantale Riddle, Lexi Ross and Cassie House had 11 kills apiece for the Lobos. Riddle added 12 digs.

Johnson had 40 assists and 11 digs for her seventh double-double of the season while senior Libero Miquella Lovato tallied 20 digs.

It's just the fifth time in program history that the Lobos have a 9-1 start through the first 10 matches. New Mexico also opened 9-1 through its first 10 matches last year as well as in 1983, 1989 and 2008.

Set One - Lobos 25, Air Force 17

The Lobos were held to three kills in the first set compared to 12 by Air Force, but won the set, 25-17, thanks to seven botched serves and 11 attack errors by the Falcons.

New Mexico got kills from Ross, Warren and House in the opening set. On 13 total team attempts, UNM had only had three attack errors. The Lobos recorded five total blocks, including three block assists from Ross.

Set Two - Lobos 25, Air Force 21

The Lobos grabbed an 11-5 lead early in set two, and maintained the lead throughout the set. The Falcons hung with the Lobos, even cutting the advantage to two points, 16-14, but powerful hitting from Warren and Riddle, and a big Krieg-Johnson stuff put New Mexico back at a comfortable 20-15 lead. A kill by House moved it to set point for the Lobos, 24-18, but Air Force prolonged it until 25-21.

House led all players with five kills in the second set and Johnson added two for UNM. The Lobos hit .205 in set two with 15 kills on 39 swings and just seven errors. New Mexico had 18 digs, holding the Falcons to 13 kills. 

Set Three - Air Force 25, Lobos 21

Air Force was able to take its first multi-point lead of the match at the start of the third set, 7-3, and held it a majority of the set. A service error by the Falcons sparked a 5-0 run for New Mexico as they  came within one point at 14-13. However, Air Force answered with three-consecutive points to push ahead to 17-13.

A kill from Riddle followed by a Warren-Ross block sent the Lobos on a 7-1 tear and gave them their first lead of the set, 20-18. The Falcons used three consecutive points to reclaim the lead, 21-20 before UNM tied it at 21-all. Air Force owned the momentum and closed out the third,on a 4-0 rally.

Air Force had the upperhand at the net in the third set, hitting .217 with 15 kills on 46 swings and only five errors. The Lobo had 14 kills and hit .179 (14-7-39).

Set Four - Lobos 26, Air Force 24

The set was point-for-point until the 9-9 mark, when a kill from Air Force's Hein prompted a 4-1 run and moved the Falcons ahead 13-10.

It was then the Lobos went for a 5-2 jaunt and tied it, 15-all. The teams traded points until a kill by House followed by a Ross-House stuff made it 19-17. Four unanswered points by Air Force put the lead back in the hands of the home team, 21-19. Back-to-back kills from Riddle and Ross tied it and a block by Riddle and Ross gave the Lobos the advantage, 22-21, the lead changed hands a few more times before UNM won the set and match with a late kill from Skye Gullatt.
